Law students can apply to work at LAW in the summer of their second or third year. Students employed with LAW for the summer must return to LAW for academic credit; they may return in either their second or third year of law school and on either a full-time or part-time basis.
Under the supervision of staff lawyers and social workers, law students conduct file work from the initial intake to the resolution of the matter. This includes interviewing clients, drafting correspondence and negotiating with opposing parties, drafting applications to various administrative boards and tribunals, analyzing medical documentation, and preparing and submitting legal arguments to the Criminal Injuries Compensation Board, the Social Benefits Tribunal, and the Landlord and Tenant Board. Students also have the opportunity to be involved in community outreach and public legal education.
